Why Sustainability Matters at Brew Naturals

With Earth Day on the horizon, it's a perfect time to reflect on the choices we make and why they matter. For me at Brew Naturals, sustainability is not just a feel-good concept or a convenient marketing angle—it’s woven into the very fabric of how I do business. From sourcing ingredients to packaging, each decision is made with intention and respect for the environment.

Let’s start with packaging. Glass bottles are my go-to for syrups and tonics because they’re infinitely recyclable, reusable, and sturdy. Unlike plastic, glass doesn’t degrade in quality when recycled, and it doesn’t leach harmful chemicals into your food or the environment. I know that packaging choices are often the first impression of sustainability that customers notice, and it’s important to me that my values are clear from the outset.

My drink pouches are biodegradable—designed to break down without leaving harmful residue behind. And those straws I provide? They’re compostable. It’s not just about aesthetics or even practicality. It’s about making sure that every piece of my packaging contributes to a healthier planet rather than detracting from it.

But packaging is only part of the equation. Sourcing is equally important. I strive to gather fresh elderberries from regional farms whenever possible. There’s something deeply satisfying about knowing the fruit in my products is grown nearby, if not harvested by yours-truly, they are harvested by hands I’ve shaken and farmers I’ve built relationships with. Keeping sourcing local not only supports my community but also helps me reduce my carbon footprint. Shipping dried berries across continents feels like a compromise I’d rather avoid.

That’s not to say I never have to reach beyond my region. Sometimes, to maintain availability, I supplement with Midwestern berries. But even then, the goal remains clear: minimize transportation, work with domestic sources, and ensure quality every step of the way.

My commitment to local sourcing extends beyond elderberries. The honey in my syrups comes from an apiary right here in my county, supporting local beekeepers and the vital work they do to maintain healthy ecosystems. When it comes to fruit for my spreads—apples, pears, peaches, cranberries—I seek out regional farms first, always prioritizing freshness and quality. If those fruits can’t be grown nearby, I ensure they’re sourced from within the U.S.

Every mindful choice adds up. Supporting local farms, prioritizing thoughtful packaging, and reducing unnecessary transportation all contribute to a more sustainable food system. It’s a continuous journey of learning, improving, and staying committed to my values.

This Earth Day, I invite you to join me in celebrating those small, intentional steps. Because true sustainability is about progress, not perfection—and every conscious choice makes a difference.
